How to Create 3D Models with Claude (2026): Blender, SketchUp, CAD & More

Can Claude make 3D models, and what's the best way to do it?

7 tools compared, checked Oct 2026

Last reviewed October 2026

Claude can't output a 3D mesh by itself. It builds models by driving 3D software. Since April 2026 there are official Claude connectors for Blender, SketchUp and Autodesk Fusion, and the community MCP for Blender server (32k stars) adds AI model generation and free asset libraries. For 3D printing, Claude writes OpenSCAD or CadQuery code that exports STL. For the web, it writes Three.js scenes. This guide covers which tool fits which job, how to install each one, and what to watch out for.

Short answer

  • Modeling, scenes and renders in Blender: MCP for Blender (formerly blender-mcp). It can build scenes, import free assets and generate models from text.
  • Inspecting, debugging and batch-editing existing .blend files: the official Blender connector from Blender Lab, installed from Claude Desktop's connector directory.
  • Quick architectural or furniture models without installing anything: the official SketchUp connector. It runs in the cloud and works in the browser.
  • Parametric CAD and engineering parts: the official Autodesk Fusion connector, or FreeCAD MCP if you want free software.
  • 3D printing (STL): ask Claude for OpenSCAD or CadQuery code, or use Meshy's MCP for printable AI models.
  • 3D in the browser: ask Claude for a Three.js scene, as an artifact or as a React Three Fiber project in Claude Code.

The Best Tools to Create 3D with Claude

MCP for Blender Most popular

ahujasid/mcp-for-blender

>31k

The community Blender MCP server, renamed from blender-mcp in September 2026. Claude builds and edits scenes, checks its work through viewport screenshots, imports assets and generates new models with AI.

Key Features

  • Create, modify and delete objects, materials and lighting
  • Viewport, camera and multi-angle screenshots so Claude can see the result
  • Free Poly Haven (CC0) and Poly Pizza assets, plus Sketchfab
  • Text- and image-to-3D via Hyper3D Rodin, Hunyuan3D, Tripo and Meshy

Installation

uvx mcp-for-blender setup
# or manually in Claude Code:
claude mcp add blender uvx mcp-for-blender

The best choice for creating 3D from scratch. The setup command configures Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor and others, and installs the Blender add-on. In Blender, press N, open the MCP for Blender tab and click Start MCP Server. It works with Blender 3.0+ and needs uv. The execute_blender_code tool runs any Python Claude writes, so save your file first. Set BLENDER_MCP_SAFE_MODE=1 to block file, network and subprocess access. Three CVEs were filed against older versions in June 2026, so keep it updated with uvx mcp-for-blender@latest update.

Official Blender Connector (Blender Lab) Official

blender.org/lab/mcp-server

Blender's own MCP server, built by Blender Lab and listed in Claude's connector directory since April 2026. It gives Claude the Python API, the bundled API reference and manual, and screenshots of the Blender UI.

Key Features

  • Runs Python in the open Blender session or in background Blender
  • Summarizes .blend files: objects, datablocks, missing files, linked libraries
  • Searches the official Python API docs and Blender manual
  • Viewport and thumbnail renders, window screenshots

Installation

Claude Desktop → Customize → Connectors → search "Blender" → Add
Then in Blender (5.1+): install the add-on from blender.org/lab/mcp-server
Edit → Preferences → Add-ons → start the MCP server

Use it on files you already have: rename datablocks, explain a Geometry Nodes setup, find what uses a material, flag heavy objects, write a batch script. It has no asset import or AI model generation, so for building from a blank scene MCP for Blender does more. It needs Claude Desktop, because Blender has to run on the same machine, and it doesn't work on claude.ai in a browser. Blender Lab warns that it runs generated code without guards and recommends a machine without sensitive data.

Best for: Understanding, fixing and batch-editing existing files Blender Lab docs

SketchUp Connector Official

claude.com/connectors/sketchup

Trimble's official connector, launched April 28, 2026. Claude builds SketchUp models in the cloud from a text description, a reference image or a floor plan.

Key Features

  • Remote MCP: nothing to install, works on claude.ai
  • Builds models from text, images or floor plans
  • Saves models to your Trimble account
  • Sign in with a Trimble ID

Installation

Claude → Customize → Connectors → search "SketchUp" → Connect

This is the fastest way to get a 3D model out of Claude. Ask for "a 4 x 6 m garden shed with a pitched roof and a double door" and it builds the model in SketchUp. Version 1 creates new models; editing your existing SketchUp files isn't supported yet.

Best for: Architecture, interiors, furniture, quick massing Connector listing

Autodesk Fusion Connector Official

claude.com/connectors/autodesk-fusion

Autodesk's local MCP server for Fusion desktop. Claude can create and modify parametric 3D models and query design data through Fusion's API.

Key Features

  • Create and modify parametric bodies, sketches and features
  • Query parameters and design data
  • Local server, enabled in Fusion's API preferences
  • Also works with Cursor and VS Code

Installation

Fusion → Preferences → General → API → enable the MCP server
Claude Desktop → Customize → Connectors → "Autodesk Fusion" → Add

It needs a Fusion subscription and the desktop app running. Autodesk suggests repetitive work and design-data questions as the best uses for now. Prompt-only modeling of complex parts is still hit-and-miss, so describe dimensions and constraints precisely and check each step.

Best for: Engineering parts, mechanical design Connector listing

Meshy MCP Text-to-3D

meshy-dev/meshy-mcp-server

>84

Meshy's official MCP server. Claude can generate textured 3D models from text or images, then remesh, rig, animate and check them for 3D printing.

Key Features

  • Text-to-3D, image-to-3D and multi-image-to-3D
  • Remesh, retexture, auto-rig and animate
  • Printability analysis and repair, send to slicer
  • Exports GLB, FBX, OBJ, STL

Installation

npx add-mcp @meshy-ai/meshy-mcp-server --env MESHY_API_KEY=your_key

Use Meshy when you want a finished textured model instead of geometry built from primitives. Generations use paid Meshy API credits. MCP for Blender can call Meshy, Rodin, Hunyuan3D and Tripo too, so if Blender is already in your workflow, generate there and keep editing in the same scene.

Best for: Game assets, props, printable figurines View on GitHub

FreeCAD MCP Free CAD

neka-nat/freecad-mcp

>3k

Connects Claude to FreeCAD, the free open-source parametric CAD app. Claude creates and edits parts, runs Python in FreeCAD and takes screenshots to check the result.

Key Features

  • Create and edit parametric objects
  • Execute FreeCAD Python code
  • Insert parts from the FreeCAD parts library
  • Screenshots for visual checks; export STEP and STL

Installation

# copy addon/FreeCADMCP into FreeCAD's addon folder, then
# MCP Addon workbench → Start RPC Server, and:
claude mcp add freecad -- uvx freecad-mcp

The most-starred CAD MCP. Claude handles FreeCAD's Python API well, so brackets, enclosures and mounts with exact dimensions work reliably. For pure code-CAD, OpenSCAD MCP servers and build123d MCP do the same job without a GUI.

Best for: Hobby CAD and 3D printing without a Fusion license View on GitHub

Unity MCP Game engine

CoplayDev/unity-mcp

>15k

The most popular bridge between Claude and the Unity Editor. Claude manages scenes, GameObjects, assets, scripts and materials directly.

Key Features

  • Create and edit scenes, GameObjects and prefabs
  • Write and fix C# scripts, read console errors
  • Manage materials, shaders and assets
  • Works with Claude Desktop, Claude Code and Cursor

Installation

Unity → Window → Package Manager → Add package from git URL:
https://github.com/CoplayDev/unity-mcp.git?path=/MCPForUnity#main

Unity also ships an official Claude Code plugin (/plugin marketplace add Unity-Technologies/unity-agent-plugin) and an MCP inside its AI Assistant package for Unity 6+. For Godot use godot-mcp (6k stars); for Unreal, unreal-mcp and similar community servers.

Set Up Claude with Blender Step by Step

1. Install Blender and uv

Install Blender and uv (curl -LsSf https://astral.sh/uv/install.sh | sh on macOS/Linux, powershell -c "irm https://astral.sh/uv/install.ps1 | iex" on Windows).

2. Run the setup

uvx mcp-for-blender setup

This detects Claude Desktop, Claude Code and other clients, writes their MCP config, and installs the Blender add-on. To set it up by hand, add this to claude_desktop_config.json:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "blender": { "command": "uvx", "args": ["mcp-for-blender"] }
  }
}

3. Start the server in Blender

In the 3D viewport press N, open the MCP for Blender tab and click Start MCP Server. Restart Claude Desktop and check for the hammer icon, or run /mcp in Claude Code.

4. Prompts that work

  • "Look at the scene, then build a low-poly campfire with logs, stones and a warm point light. Take a screenshot from the camera when done."
  • "Import a wooden table and two chairs from Poly Haven and arrange them on a rug."
  • "Generate a stylized treasure chest with Hyper3D and place it at the origin."
  • "Write a Geometry Nodes setup that scatters rocks on the selected terrain."

Ask Claude to take a screenshot after each step. It fixes far more mistakes when it can see the viewport.

Troubleshooting

  • spawn uvx ENOENT: Claude Desktop can't find uvx. Use the full path from which uvx in command.
  • Tools missing: only one client can connect at a time. Close other Claude or Cursor windows using it.
  • Official vs community: the Blender Lab connector and MCP for Blender both default to port 9876. Run one at a time.

Create 3D-Printable Models (STL) with Claude

For functional prints (brackets, enclosures, replacement parts), have Claude write code-CAD instead of sculpting a mesh. The dimensions come out exact and you can change any parameter later.

  • OpenSCAD: ask "Write a parametric OpenSCAD model for a wall hook, 40 mm wide, 5 mm thick, with two countersunk M4 screw holes." Open it in OpenSCAD, press F6, then export STL. OpenSCAD MCP servers let Claude render previews and fix errors itself.
  • CadQuery / build123d: Python CAD libraries that Claude knows well. Claude Code can write the script, run it and export STEP or STL in one go.
  • FreeCAD MCP or the Fusion connector: when you want a parametric model you can keep editing in a GUI.
  • Meshy MCP: for organic shapes like figurines and miniatures, with printability checks and repair.

Tip: ask for wall thickness of at least 1.2 mm, no unsupported overhangs past 45°, and tolerances (+0.2 mm) on holes that need to fit screws or other parts.

3D in the Browser: Three.js with Claude

Claude writes interactive 3D for the web with Three.js. Two ways to use it:

  • Claude artifacts (claude.ai): ask "Create an interactive Three.js scene of the solar system with orbiting planets and mouse controls" and it runs in the chat. Artifacts have historically loaded an older Three.js build (r128), so newer classes such as CapsuleGeometry and addon imports like OrbitControls may fail. If something breaks, ask Claude to build it as a single HTML file that loads Three.js from a CDN.
  • Claude Code: no version limits. Ask for a React Three Fiber + drei project, or plain Three.js with Vite, for product viewers, configurators, portfolio hero scenes or small games.

Build in layers: geometry first, then materials and lighting, then animation and interaction. You'll get better results than with one large prompt. Claude can also export a Blender scene to GLB and load it into a Three.js viewer.

Getting Started

  1. Pick the tool for the job: MCP for Blender for creative scenes, the Blender connector for existing files, SketchUp for no-install models, Fusion or FreeCAD for CAD, Meshy for generated meshes, Three.js for the web.
  2. Install with the commands above and restart Claude.
  3. Save your work first. Most of these tools run code Claude writes.
  4. Iterate with screenshots: ask Claude to look at the result after each step and fix what's off.

Example prompt: "Create a cozy low-poly cabin scene in Blender: log cabin, pine trees, a path and evening lighting. Screenshot the camera view, then improve anything that looks wrong."

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Claude make 3D models?

Yes, but by using tools. Claude doesn't output meshes itself. It writes Blender Python, drives SketchUp or Fusion through official connectors, calls text-to-3D services like Meshy, writes OpenSCAD or CadQuery code for 3D printing, or builds Three.js scenes for the web.

Is there an official Claude Blender connector?

Yes. Blender Lab built an official Blender MCP server, listed in Claude's connector directory since April 2026. Add it in Claude Desktop under Customize → Connectors, then install the add-on from blender.org/lab/mcp-server. It's built for inspecting and editing existing files and doesn't generate models or import assets.

What's the difference between Blender MCP and MCP for Blender?

The official Blender connector (Blender Lab, GPL) gives Claude the Python API, docs search and file analysis. MCP for Blender (formerly ahujasid/blender-mcp, MIT, about 32k stars) is a community project that adds viewport screenshots, Poly Haven and Sketchfab assets, and AI model generation through Rodin, Hunyuan3D, Tripo and Meshy. Use the community server to create and the official connector to inspect or debug.

Is Blender MCP safe to use?

Both servers let Claude run arbitrary Python inside Blender, which can delete data or read files. Save your work first, keep the server on localhost, and use the latest version: three CVEs were filed against older MCP for Blender releases in 2026. MCP for Blender has a safe mode (BLENDER_MCP_SAFE_MODE=1), and Blender Lab recommends a machine with no sensitive data.

Does Blender MCP work with the free Claude plan?

Yes. Local MCP servers and the official Blender connector work in Claude Desktop on any plan, including Free. Long modeling sessions use a lot of messages, so Free plan limits run out quickly. Neither works on claude.ai in a browser, because Blender has to run on your computer.

Can I use Blender MCP with Claude Code?

Yes. Run 'claude mcp add blender uvx mcp-for-blender', start the server from the MCP for Blender tab in Blender, and check the connection with /mcp. 'uvx mcp-for-blender setup' configures Claude Code automatically.

Can Claude create STL files for 3D printing?

Yes. Ask Claude for a parametric OpenSCAD or CadQuery model with exact dimensions, then export STL. Claude Code can run the script and export the file directly. For organic shapes, Meshy's MCP generates models and checks printability.

Can Claude make 3D models without installing software?

Yes. The official SketchUp connector builds models in Trimble's cloud and works on claude.ai. Claude artifacts can also render interactive Three.js scenes directly in the chat.
