Use this skill any time a spreadsheet file is the primary input or output. This means any task where the user wants to: open, read, edit, or fix an existing .xlsx, .xlsm, .xltx, .csv, or .tsv file (e.g., adding columns, computing formulas, formatting, charting, cleaning messy data); create a new spreadsheet from scratch or from other data sources; or convert between tabular file formats. Trigger especially when the user references a spreadsheet file by name or path - even casually (like \"the xlsx in my downloads\") - and wants something done to it or produced from it. Also trigger for cleaning or restructuring messy tabular data files (malformed rows, misplaced headers, junk data) into proper spreadsheets. The deliverable must be a spreadsheet file. Do NOT trigger when the primary deliverable is a Word document, HTML report, standalone Python script, database pipeline, or Google Sheets API integration, even if tabular data is involved.

What are Claude Skills?
Claude Skills (Agent Skills) are reusable capabilities you add to Claude Code. Each skill is a folder with a SKILL.md file of instructions plus optional scripts. Claude loads a skill only when it is relevant, or when you call it with /skill-name.
This directory merges the official Anthropic skills with the two largest community lists, removes duplicates and dead links, and works out how to install each one from the files in its repo. Search it, sort it by stars, or jump to the install guide.
94 entries from these lists point at repos or folders that no longer exist on GitHub. They are left out here.

Official Anthropic Skills (19)
Use this skill whenever the user wants to create, read, edit, or manipulate Word documents (.docx files) or Word templates (.dotx files). Triggers include: any mention of 'Word doc', 'word document', '.docx', '.dotx', or requests to produce professional documents with formatting like tables of contents, headings, page numbers, or letterheads. Also use when extracting or reorganizing content from .docx or .dotx files, inserting or replacing images in documents, performing find-and-replace in Word files, working with tracked changes or comments, or converting content into a polished Word document. If the user asks for a 'report', 'memo', 'letter', 'template', or similar deliverable as a Word or .docx file, use this skill. Do NOT use for PDFs, spreadsheets, Google Docs, or general coding tasks unrelated to document generation.
Use this skill any time a .pptx or .potx file is involved in any way - as input, output, or both. This includes: creating slide decks, pitch decks, or presentations; reading, parsing, or extracting text from any .pptx or .potx file (even if the extracted content will be used elsewhere, like in an email or summary); editing, modifying, or updating existing presentations; combining or splitting slide files; working with templates (.potx), layouts, speaker notes, or comments. Trigger whenever the user mentions \"deck,\" \"slides,\" \"presentation,\" or references a .pptx or .potx filename, regardless of what they plan to do with the content afterward. If a .pptx or .potx file needs to be opened, created, or touched, use this skill.
Use this skill whenever the user wants to do anything with PDF files. This includes reading or extracting text/tables from PDFs, combining or merging multiple PDFs into one, splitting PDFs apart, rotating pages, adding watermarks, creating new PDFs, filling PDF forms, encrypting/decrypting PDFs, extracting images, and OCR on scanned PDFs to make them searchable. If the user mentions a .pdf file or asks to produce one, use this skill.
Creating algorithmic art using p5.js with seeded randomness and interactive parameter exploration. Use this when users request creating art using code, generative art, algorithmic art, flow fields, or particle systems. Create original algorithmic art rather than copying existing artists' work to avoid copyright violations.
Applies Anthropic's official brand colors and typography to any sort of artifact that may benefit from having Anthropic's look-and-feel. Use it when brand colors or style guidelines, visual formatting, or company design standards apply.
Create beautiful visual art in .png and .pdf documents using design philosophy. You should use this skill when the user asks to create a poster, piece of art, design, or other static piece. Create original visual designs, never copying existing artists' work to avoid copyright violations.
Guide users through a structured workflow for co-authoring documentation. Use when user wants to write documentation, proposals, technical specs, decision docs, or similar structured content. This workflow helps users efficiently transfer context, refine content through iteration, and verify the doc works for readers. Trigger when user mentions writing docs, creating proposals, drafting specs, or similar documentation tasks.

Reference for the Claude API / Anthropic SDK - model ids, pricing, params, streaming, tool use, MCP, agents, caching, token counting, model migration. TRIGGER - read BEFORE opening the target file; don't skip because it "looks like a one-liner" - whenever: the prompt names Claude/Anthropic in any form (Claude, Anthropic, Fable, Opus, Sonnet, Haiku, anthropic, @anthropic-ai, claude-*, us.anthropic.*, [1m]); the user asks about an LLM (pricing/model choice/limits/caching) - never answer from memory; OR the task is LLM-shaped with provider unstated (agent/MCP/tool-definition/multi-agent/RAG/LLM-judge/computer-use; generate/summarize/extract/classify/rewrite/converse over NL; debugging refusals/cutoffs/streaming/tool-calls/tokens). SKIP only when another provider is being worked on (overrides all triggers): OpenAI/GPT/Gemini/Llama/Mistral/Cohere/Ollama named in the query; OR grep -rE 'openai|langchain_openai|google.generativeai|genai|mistralai|cohere|ollama' over the project hits (run this grep FIRST if no provider named - don't Read the file).
Stop and check this skill before finishing any reply to a question about how to use Claude or a Claude product - it recommends matching courses, tutorials, and use cases from Claude Academy (academy.claude.com), Anthropic's learning hub. Trigger on: "how do I", "how can I", "getting started with", "what can Claude do", "teach me", "learn to use"; questions about artifacts, projects, skills, plugins, connectors, MCP; requests about rolling Claude out to a team, class, or organization; and any ask for training materials, onboarding content, or learning resources. Use it when the user is learning how to use a feature or product - not when they are mid-task and just want the task done. This skill composes with other skills: after consulting product documentation to answer how a Claude feature works, also check here for a matching course or tutorial - a docs-grounded answer and an Academy recommendation belong together. Only recommend on a strong match; never invent Academy content.
After you give a substantive answer or draft that the user may act on - advice or recommendations, drafted artifacts such as goals, plans, pitches, proposals, or emails, estimates or projections, analysis or interpretation of data, factual claims they may rely on, or a multi-step argument - invoke this skill BEFORE finalizing your reply and then, if it applies, append 2-3 short follow-up questions, each tied to something specific in what you just produced, that help the user check key facts, probe the reasoning or assumptions, and notice missing context. Do this at most once per conversation. Skip it when the user asked a trivial how-to or simple lookup, wants a purely educational explanation, asked you only to format, convert, or assemble a file from content they provided, is writing code they will run, is doing creative writing or casual chat, or already asked you to double-check, cite, or review - the skill file explains these boundaries and the exact output format.

How to install a Claude skill
Every install command above uses one of these three methods, picked from what the skill's repo actually contains. Restart Claude Code or run /reload-skills afterwards.
When a repo ships a .claude-plugin/marketplace.json, add the marketplace once inside Claude Code, then install the plugin that contains the skill. Updates come through /plugin.
The open skills CLI copies one skill, or every skill in a repo, into the right folder for Claude Code. Run it in your terminal from the project root.
Works for any skill on GitHub: clone the repo and copy the folder that holds SKILL.md into your skills directory.
.claude/skills/<name>/SKILL.md, commit it and your team gets it too.~/.claude/skills/<name>/SKILL.md, or add -g to npx skills add. Before you install: check what a skill can do
A skill is instructions Claude follows, and many include scripts Claude may run on your machine. Stars are not a security review. Two minutes on GitHub catches most problems.
Look for scripts
Open the skill folder. A SKILL.md alone is just instructions. A scripts/ folder means code Claude may execute.
Check network calls
Search the scripts for curl, fetch or requests. Know where your data would go before Claude runs them.
Watch for credentials
A skill that asks for API keys or reads .env files needs more trust. Prefer ones that use your existing tools.
Know the author
Official Anthropic skills and well-maintained repos with recent commits are the safest start. Pin a version you reviewed.
Frequently asked questions
What are Claude Skills?
Claude Skills (Agent Skills) are modular capabilities defined in a SKILL.md file containing instructions plus optional scripts and resources. Claude loads a skill only when it is relevant to your task, or when you invoke it directly with /skill-name. Unlike CLAUDE.md, which loads every session, skills load on demand to keep context lean.
How do I install a Claude skill from GitHub?
Three ways. If the repo has a plugin marketplace, run /plugin marketplace add owner/repo in Claude Code, then /plugin install <plugin>@<marketplace>. Otherwise use npx skills add owner/repo --skill <name> -a claude-code in your terminal, or copy the folder containing SKILL.md into .claude/skills/ (one project) or ~/.claude/skills/ (all projects). Each skill in this directory shows the command that fits its repo.
How do I install a skill globally?
Put the skill folder in ~/.claude/skills/<name>/ instead of the project's .claude/skills/. With the skills CLI, add -g to npx skills add. Global skills are available in every project; project skills can be committed so your whole team gets them.
What are the official Anthropic skills?
Anthropic publishes 19 skills in the anthropics/skills repository, including docx, pdf, pptx and xlsx for documents, plus skills such as frontend-design, mcp-builder, skill-creator, canvas-design and webapp-testing. Install them with /plugin marketplace add anthropics/skills and then /plugin install document-skills@anthropic-agent-skills or example-skills@anthropic-agent-skills. They are listed first in this directory.
What is the difference between a Claude skill and an MCP server?
A skill is instructions - a Markdown playbook that shapes how Claude performs a task, and Claude can invoke it automatically. An MCP server adds new tools and data connections, such as a database, API, or app. In short: skills tell Claude how to do something, while MCP servers give Claude new things to act on.
Skills vs subagents: what is the difference?
A skill adds know-how to the conversation you are already in: Claude reads the SKILL.md and follows it. A subagent is a separate Claude instance with its own context window that works on a task and reports back. Use a skill to teach a procedure, a subagent to hand off a chunk of work.
Skills vs slash commands - what should I use?
Both can live in your .claude/ directory. A slash command (.claude/commands/<name>.md) is user-invoked - you type /name. A skill (SKILL.md) adds a description so Claude can auto-invoke it based on context, and it can bundle extra files, scripts, and tool restrictions. Use commands for quick prompts, skills for richer reusable capabilities.
Are Claude skills safe?
Treat them like any code from the internet. Skills that only contain instructions are low risk. Skills with scripts can run code on your machine when Claude uses them, so check the scripts for network calls and credential access before installing, and prefer official or well-maintained repos.
Do skills work outside Claude Code?
Yes. The same SKILL.md format works in the Claude apps, where you can upload a skill in settings, and through the Claude API. The skills CLI can also install them for other coding agents that support the format.
Are Claude Skills free?
Yes. The skills themselves are free files you add to Claude Code, and most in this directory are open-source on GitHub. There is no separate charge to use a skill - you only pay for your normal Claude usage when the skill runs.
